Hyundai made history in 2022 when it won the prestigious World Car of the Year award with the IONIQ 5, a groundbreaking electric SUV that impressed critics and customers alike with its design, performance, and technology. Now, the Korean automaker is aiming to repeat its success with the IONIQ 6, a sleek and futuristic electric sedan that is one of the three finalists for the 2023 edition of the award.
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is also a contender for the World Electric Car of the Year and the World Car Design of the Year awards, following in the footsteps of its sibling, the IONIQ 5, which swept all three categories last year. The IONIQ 6 is based on the same advanced and dedicated electric platform as the IONIQ 5, called E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), which allows for a spacious and versatile interior, a long-range battery, and a fast-charging system.
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is expected to launch this weekend and will soon be available in other markets worldwide. The sedan will offer two battery options: a standard 53-kWh pack that delivers 149 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and a long-range 77.4-kWh pack that boosts the output to 320 hp and 446 pound-feet of torque. The latter option will also be available with an all-wheel-drive system that can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds.
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 will also boast a range of over 400 miles on a single charge, depending on the battery size and driving mode. Using a DC fast charger, the sedan will support an 800-volt charging system that can replenish up to 80% of the battery in as little as 18 minutes. Moreover, the IONIQ 6 will feature a bi-directional charging capability that can power other devices or vehicles using its battery.
The IONIQ 6 will not only impress with its performance and efficiency but also with its style and sophistication. The electric sedan will showcase Hyundai’s new design language, Parametric Dynamics, combining sharp angles, smooth curves, and dynamic details. The sedan will also inherit some elements from the stunning Prophecy concept that was unveiled in 2020, such as the pixel-inspired LED headlights and taillights, the aerodynamic rear spoiler, and the clamshell hood.
