Why is the Avatar sequel breaking movie theater projectors?

Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron's pharaonic film endeavor, is doing well in theaters worldwide. According to Variety, the long-awaited sequel to Avatar has already grossed $555.9 million in its first five days on the big screen. So far this year, just seven films have grossed more than $500 million (Avatar: The Way of Water still has a long way to go on the billboard).

Everything points to Avatar: The Way of Water breaking the billion-dollar mark before the end of the year. However, James Cameron's latest feature will fail to replicate the popularity of its predecessor, which holds the record for the highest-grossing film in history (and will probably keep this famous title).

The first Avatar film grossed approximately $3.4 billion at the box office in 2009. According to James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water's sequel will require at least $2 billion to be profitable. However, this will only be possible if movie theater screenings run smoothly (which is only sometimes the case).

Several Japanese cinema theaters have reported issues with the film's highly complex technology, which projects at 48 frames per second rather than 24 frames per second (which is the norm).

According to James Cameron, this technique makes the film's projection twice as fluid without compromising the seventh art's typical optics. Engadget says that many Japanese theaters need help showing the movie, and some of their projectors have broken because of the difficult HFR (High Frame Rate) technology.

In fact, one of the affected movie theaters had to drop the projection speed from 48 to 24 frames per second to finish the film. Also, some customers have complained about technical problems during the movie showing and asked the theaters to refund at least part of their ticket price.
