Volvo redefines elegance in a family-friendly electric car with the new EX90 electric SUV, challenging established design conventions so that design, safety, and aesthetics go hand in hand. The Volvo EX90 is the safest family car Volvo has ever released, thanks to its advanced safety features and sensors.
Volvo's new completely electric SUV demonstrates that practicality and safety do not have to come at the expense of aesthetics and attractive design. One of the most challenging aspects of developing an electric vehicle is balancing aesthetics and efficiency. With a sleek and aerodynamic form, the Volvo EX90 electric SUV is engineered and structured to give a fantastic range on a single charge.
The aerodynamic design with a sleek and rounded front paired with smooth windows and handles allows air to flow freely toward the vehicle's rear. The Volvo EX90 electric SUV achieves a drag coefficient of 0.29 thanks to its exterior design choices, which is exceptionally competitive for a big 7-seater SUV.
"The sleek and elegant design of a yacht inspired us." The front of the car appears proud and confident, and it is inspired by the power of a sailboat to cut through the roaring waves of the sea. At the same time, it features a round and soft form that allows the wind to flow more efficiently past the car," says T. Jon Mayer, Volvo Cars' Head of Exterior Design.
Volvo demonstrates that it is feasible to integrate safety systems into an elegant design, in addition to the benefit of the aerodynamic design, which provides a more extended range.
The Volvo EX90 includes LiDAR as standard equipment. LiDAR is a sensor system that reads and records distances using a pulsed laser. The technology, for example, can read pedestrians from a distance of 250 meters and so react quickly.
"It was a design challenge to integrate the LiDAR technology into the car without compromising the design while preserving excellent safety conditions," T. Jon Mayer adds. "The LiDAR system is the car's eyes, and for many, integrating it at the front of the grille would be the most obvious thing to do." That would be the same as putting your eyes on your knees. As a result, it makes more sense to integrate the system as high as feasible for it to become more exact and capable of reading a greater region. T. Jon Mayer continues, "In consultation with our engineers, we chose to integrate LiDAR onto the roof of the automobile to enhance efficiency."
Volvo's Scandinavian traditions inspire the Volvo EX90's design. The car's panoramic glass roof was inspired by long, bright summer nights and dark winters to let in as much light as possible.
"We focused on developing the Volvo EX90 electric SUV with a cooler outward expression that reflects the dark, chilly winters and a warm interior that symbolizes internal tranquility in front of the wood stove. It also demonstrates how Scandinavians are seen; we may appear chilly and closed at first, but once you get to know us, we are warm and friendly." T. Jon Mayer concludes, "This is exactly the confidence we want to exhibit in our autos."
The Volvo EX90 electric SUV will be unveiled in Stockholm on November 9, 2022.
