Volkswagen is taking a big step forward in its electrification strategy with the launch of the ID.7, its first all-electric sedan, at its Emden plant in Germany. The ID.7 is the latest addition to the ID family of electric vehicles, which includes the ID.3 hatchback and the ID.4 crossover.
The Volkswagen ID.7 is a midsize sedan that aims to compete with the likes of the Tesla Model 3, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It is based on the MEB platform, designed specifically for electric vehicles and allows for a spacious interior, a large battery pack, and various powertrain options.
The Volkswagen ID.7 offers a range of up to 435 miles (700 km) on a single charge, according to the European WLTP cycle, thanks to its 86 kWh battery option. The base model comes with a 77 kWh battery that delivers a range of 382 miles (615 km). The battery can be recharged from 5% to 80% in about 35 minutes using a 125 kW fast charger.
The ID.7 also boasts impressive performance, with a maximum output of 210 kW (286 hp) from its rear-mounted electric motor. An all-wheel-drive version with a second motor on the front axle is expected to arrive later, with a combined output of 250 kW (340 hp). The ID.7 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).
The Volkswagen ID.7 features a sleek and futuristic design, with LED headlights and taillights, a large glass roof, and aerodynamic wheels. The interior is minimalist and modern, with a digital cockpit, a head-up display, and a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The ID.7 also offers advanced driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and emergency braking.
The Volkswagen ID.7 is expected to start at around $44,000 (37,000 euros) in Germany, where customers can already place their orders. The first deliveries are scheduled for this fall in Europe, while North America will have to wait until 2024 to get their hands on the electric sedan. Volkswagen plans to produce the ID.7 locally for the Chinese market through joint ventures.
The launch of the VW ID.7 marks an important milestone for Volkswagen, which aims to become the global leader in electric mobility by 2025. The company has invested billions of dollars in developing new electric models, upgrading its factories, and expanding its charging network. Volkswagen hopes that the ID.7 will appeal to existing and new customers looking for a stylish, spacious, and efficient electric vehicle.
The ID.7 symbolized Volkswagen’s transformation after the diesel emissions scandal that rocked the company in 2015. The company has since apologized for its wrongdoing and committed to making amends by focusing on clean, sustainable mobility solutions.
